In New York, visual artists combined their interest in action painting with ideas of the avant-garde composer John Cage to blur the line between art and life. Shifting attention from the art object to the artist’s action further suggested that art existed in real space and real time. It often forces us to think about issues in a way that can be disturbing and uncomfortable, but it can also make us laugh by calling attention to the absurdities in life and the idiosyncrasies of human behavior. But, at its best, it taps into our most basic shared instincts: our physical and psychological needs for food, shelter, sex, and human interaction our individual fears and self-consciousness our concerns about life, the future, and the world we live in. Indeed, at its worst, performance art can seem gratuitous, boring or just plain weird. Many people associate performance art with highly publicized controversies over government funding of the arts, censorship, and standards of public decency. They have alternative methods of "making a living" and their performance art is just a hobby. They take from others on a regular and consistent basis to support their needs. They "pass the hat" - if you enjoyed their performance you can leave a financial token of your appreciation or 'donate" money to them for their work on a consistent and regular basis. They second themselves (hire themselves out) to other companies that are contracted to provide "accessories" or "decoration" or entertainment at various events - on a consistent and regular basis. They are awarded private or public grants to produce the work on a consistent and regular basis. They have a patron who believes in the artist and in their work and that patron chooses to "support" the artist financially on a consistent and regular basis. There would have to be a demand for their art which they can supply on a consistent and dependable basis. They have to be very good at what they do so that they can charge money for the art they provide.
